Based in Hamilton, New Zealand, the Waikato Hot Air Balloon Club (WHABC) was formed in May 1993 by a group of enthusiasts who saw a need for such a club after a highly successful Hamilton Balloon Fiesta.

The club became an Incorporated Society and quickly set about raising money to buy its own balloon. This was done by August 1993 and the first balloon arrived in September 1993. We purchased a second balloon in March 1995 and have recently purchased a third envelope. We have maintained membership numbers of over 35 over that time and have trained numerous pilots and crew.

In 2003, the Club celebrated its tenth anniversary. The club also took part in the Pre-World Championships in Mildura, Australia in 2003 and again at the World Championships at the same site in 2004. The World Hot Air Balloon Championships gave members a chance to see how competitions are run and to participate at International level.

The club continues to grow with some members now owning their own balloons and the youth interest has given rise to the junior balloonist membership program.
